When a feminist begins to nest

Welcome to the nest

Published by smallgood at 5:51 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

My very first post on my new blog.  I just wanted to state for the record, I can spell.  In fact, one of my coworkers- Mr. Willie B- says I put the other English teachers to shame because I’m a spelling guru.  So not true, but nonetheless, Feminest is not a typo.

I decided to name the blog Feminest because I identify myself as a feminist.  And thankfully, my new husband identifies as a feminist as well.  We moved into our new home not three months ago, and we have just gotten married (very recent…like last week…seriously).  Personally, I didn’t expect the changes of moving in together (hell, we had lived together a year previously) 3.5 hours away from any family and tying the knot to really have any bearing on who I am as a person in regards to my social beliefs.  But I grossly underestimated the power of those actions.  Matrimony and sharing a household has led me to want to nest.  I have a strong desire to set up house and play with all things domestic.  And yet, how do I bridge these impulses with my feminist beliefs that women can and should be in the workplace?

Thus, the feminest is born.  The little haven that Bigbad and I are setting up.  The little home that is ours.  Not his, not mine; but ours.  The space that is a complicated mess of traditions and new gender roles.  It’s an exploration of familiar territories.  It’s the happy settling of antitheses.

Thanks for dropping in.

This is a great concept for a blog. I struggle with a lot of the same issues myself. Being a military wife who has ambitions to define herself as something other than just “a military wife,” I enjoy your point of view! Look forward to reading more.

I’ve tagged you on my blog. Stop by to check it out!
